Maternity ward
Maternity ward - Description
With more than 4,500 births per year, CHIREC is one of the largest childbirth centres in Belgium.
Our "maternity" services are located at two of our sites:
- Edith Cavell Clinic
- Braine-l’Alleud – Waterloo Hospital
Highly qualified teams of obstetricians, paediatricians, neonatologists, midwives, psychologists, social workers and physiotherapists work together to ensure that our prospective mothers and their babies receive the best possible care in an environment that is well suited to their needs.
At the Cavell site, a high-risk pregnancy unit (MIC) provides intensive treatment for all conditions that may occur during the mother's pregnancy or affect her baby.
A Neonatal Intensive Care unit (NIC) looks after very premature babies and newborns who need intensive monitoring and care.
On both sites, a Neonatology unit called N* looks after premature babies aged over 34 weeks, newborns with low birth weight and all newborn babies who have problems at birth (e.g. hypoglycaemia, neonatal infection or other problems at birth that do not require intensive monitoring).
A large number of transfers in utero take place from other maternity units to CHIREC, which demonstrates the excellence of our maternity services.
Our institution's philosophy places great emphasis on close contact and good relationships between our specialist doctors and our patients. As a pregnant mother, you will be monitored throughout your pregnancy by the gynaecologist of your choice.
The nurse-midwives also provide consultations, and during these they can offer you more information and answer the questions that concern you the most.
Our maternity units share the same philosophy but each one retains its own character. Find out more about both by clicking on the following links:
