Maxillofacial surgery - Description

Maxillofacial surgery is a specialty not often highlighted in the media and is therefore less well-known. It requires a very long course of training - at least 14 years - and there are only a small number of specialists.

Maxillofacial surgeons therefore specialise in operating on the face, an area that is also closely linked to stomatology.

It would be inconceivable to reconstruct a face without having a detailed knowledge of the teeth and jaws, which are the keystones of facial architecture and also the starting point for reconstructive work.

The specialty can be divided into two main areas: surgery to hard tissues and surgery to soft tissues.

This may be extended to include surgery to the neck, in both children and adults.
