Nephrology - Description

The Nephrology and Dialysis Department at CHIREC is based at two centres:

The first is located at the Cavell site, which is the centre for assisted dialysis, and the second is at the Braine-l'Alleud - Waterloo site, for self-directed dialysis.

At the Cavell site, we are able to carry out haemodialysis, haemofiltration, continuous peritoneal dialysis, either ambulatory or machine-assisted (Cycleur), as well as plasmapheresis.
We also look after patients who have been admitted for renal investigations or are suffering from an intercurrent illness.

At the Braine-l'Alleud - Waterloo site, we provide care for patients on self-directed dialysis, who are more independent and do not need such close monitoring.
If a patient on self-directed dialysis at Braine-l'Alleud needs to be admitted to hospital, he or she will be treated at Edith Cavell Clinic.

A doctor from the team and a nurse are on call 24 hours a day to deal with renal or dialysis-related problems. A peritoneal dialysis specialist nurse provides a telephone cover service in case any problems arise in connection with this technique.
The opening times for both services are 07.00 to 18.00 on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, and 08.00 to 13.00 on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays for regular services.
These opening times can be extended without limitation if there is an urgent need.

We organise transport to the relevant centre for patients receiving dialysis and support patients who have social or economic difficulties, working in collaboration with our Social Department.

Our specialist doctors provide nephrology and hypertension consultations, follow up patients who have received transplants and provide renal opinions.
These activities take place at the Cavell, Braine-l’Alleud and St Anne St Rémi sites.

Specialist nurses provide a "pre-dialysis consultation" at which they inform patients about the various treatment techniques available to treat renal insufficiency and help them to choose a technique.

A psychologist who is linked to the department is available to help patients who are in difficulty or simply need to talk.
An occupational therapist trained in "well-being" massage techniques is available to care for our patients.

We work with a number of transplant centres (Erasme Hospital, Cliniques universitaires St Luc, KUL) and refer patients to them who are candidates for renal transplantation, after completing the pre-transplantation investigations.

Our specific approach is to provide personalised medical services in a friendly, family atmosphere, which allows our patients who are receiving dialysis not to feel that they are "in hospital" but in a caring environment that they enjoy visiting.

Each year we organise a number of seminars and symposia for GPs.
