Neurology - Description

Neurology is responsible for the diagnosis and treatment of diseases affecting the nervous system. This system has a central component (the brain and spinal cord) and a peripheral component (peripheral nerves and muscles).

The neurology units at the four CHIREC sites (Parc Leopold Clinic, Edith Cavell Clinic, Basilique Clinic, Braine-l’Alleud - Waterloo Hospital) offer all diagnostic and treatment options for most diseases affecting the central and peripheral nervous systems.

The diseases that occur most frequently are:

  • Headache, including migraine
  • Multiple sclerosis
  • Epilepsy
  • Cognitive and memory disturbance, including Alzheimer's disease
  • Gait and motor disturbance, including Parkinson's disease
  • Sleep-related diseases
  • Peripheral neuropathies

Two of our sites also have their own specialist areas:

Parc Leopold Site
Proximity to the Neurosurgery Unit makes it possible to discuss and provide medicosurgical management of neurological diseases (particularly those affecting the spinal column).
The service also has excellent neurophysiology facilities (EEG, EMG and evoked potentials).

Edith Cavell Site
In addition to the usual work of a state-of-the-art hospital neurology unit, the Neurology Unit at the Edith Cavell Clinic looks after patients whose condition, due to its chronic and complex nature or due to the absence of an identifiable nerve lesion, cannot be effectively treated using traditional therapeutic approaches, specifically medications. Based on the latest advances in clinical neuroscience and supported by a university-level Clinical Neurophysiology Laboratory and an experienced, effective team of neuropsychologists and physiotherapists, our unit seeks to offer multidisciplinary, integrated and personalised care to patients.

To achieve this, in a spirit of critical openness, it makes use of all medical or paramedical disciplines that seek to improve well-being or minimise symptoms, aiming for long-term functional optimisation of the structures within the brain that are injured or simply dysfunctional.
The Clinical Neurophysiology Laboratory based at the Edith Cavell site is able to provide all functional assessments that fall within this discipline: electroencephalography; sensory, motor and cognitive evoked potentials; electromyography; extended EEG recording using the Holter method; and movement analysis.

These investigations are systematically matched to the individual's problems with a view to supporting clinicians in the diagnostic and treatment process.
