Radiotherapy-oncology
Radiotherapy-oncology - Description
The Oncological Radiotherapy Unit looks after patients who are suffering from the effects of tumours and require treatment with ionising radiation.
Our specialist teams provide treatment and follow-up for patients with malignant tumours who need to be treated with radiation.
Radiotherapy is one of the mainstays of treatment for the majority of malignant tumours.
That is why oncological radiotherapists are an integral part of the multidisciplinary teams at the CHIREC Cancer Institute.
The aim of radiotherapy treatment is to deliver a high enough dose of radiation within a tumour to destroy the cancerous cells whilst sparing nearby healthy tissues.
Several techniques have been developed in order to achieve this aim, depending on the location, size and type of the tumour.
We decide on the most appropriate treatment method on the basis of the characteristics of the tumour and in accordance with the latest international recommendations.
In some specific cases we may need to treat benign diseases: keloid scars, periprosthetic ossification and benign cerebral tumours.
Our unit has an outpatient centre where consultations are available with four experienced oncology doctors who provide radiotherapy.
It also has very recently updated technical facilities, which therefore comprise the very latest technology. Medical staff are available continuously from 08:00 to 18:00.
We welcome 90 to 100 patients every day, maintaining a human approach and treating our patients with respect.
