Edith Cavell Clinic

Edith Cavell Clinic has been one of the pillars of the CHIREC organisation since it first came into being.

Some history...

It all began at the dawn of the 20th century, with an encounter between two different ambitions: Dr Depage was looking to create a private, non-denominational hospital service that would offer the very latest developments in medicine, while Edith Cavell had been working since 1910 to set up the first school of nursing in Belgium on the basis of her experiences at the London Hospital.
With a new site in the municipality of Uccle and thanks to the help of a number of sponsors, including the Solvay family, these ambitions began to take shape. A number of key figures in the world of medicine came alongside as the institution grew and survived the ups and downs of more than 100 years of history.
One of the most notable events in the history of our site was the creation of the Maternity Hospital in 1923, a first in Brussels. It continued to grow, from 47 births in 1923 to almost 700 births per year in 1950,  finally celebrating the arrival of the 100,000th baby in 1997!

Today…

The site in Uccle, located in the midst of a residential belt in South Brussels, has almost 300 beds. It is easily accessible by public transport (specify which) and also has a car park for patients (rue Général Lotz).  Each year we welcome 14,000 hospital admissions, 12,000 surgical or medical day hospital cases and almost 3,400 births.
With just over 400 accredited doctors covering every specialty with the exception of cardiac surgery: women and children, orthopaedics, gastrointestinal and bariatric surgery, plastic surgery, ophthalmology and many other departments, we offer all the medical expertise and infrastructure facilities that are needed in order to provide the best possible care to our patients.
Equipment for medical imaging, nuclear medicine and radiotherapy, as well as our laboratory, all operate to the very best and latest quality standards.
It is important not to forget the care provided by our teams of nurses and paramedical specialists, who are responsible for providing multidisciplinary care to so many patients who have entrusted to us the most valuable thing they have - their health.  All our staff also have an excellent range of language skills, which is a useful asset given that almost a third of our patients are of foreign nationality.

The site also has an adult and children's on-call service, which is increasingly rare in the Brussels region. Finally, we have two outpatient centres: the Women's Clinic situated nearby at Rue Depage 41, Uccle, and the Europe-Lambermont Centre at rue des Pensees 1-5, Schaerbeek.

Here are a few figures:

  • 286 approved beds
  • Approximately 14,000 inpatient admissions (equivalent to 75,000 nights)
  • 12,000 one-day hospital admissions: 6,500 surgical, 5,500 medical
  • 800 staff, most of whom are nurses
  • 420 doctors working in all specialties
  • 130 paramedical staff
  • And 65 volunteers
