More information
- You will be given a questionnaire.
- You will lie on your stomach for 20 minutes. Your breasts will be gently compressed to minimise movement caused by your breathing.
- A catheter will be gently inserted into a vein in your arm – a procedure as painless as having a blood test – to facilitate the flow of contrast medium.
- An intravenous injection of gadolinium (an MRI-specific contrast agent) will be administered. This agent is not iodine-based and very rarely causes side effects.
- As the scan may be noisy, you will be provided with noise-cancelling headphones to reduce the noise from the machine. You may also choose to use earplugs if you prefer.
- Once your MRI scan is complete, the radiographer will ask you to wait in the waiting room.
- The breast specialist will then come to tell you whether a follow-up scan is necessary.
You may need to undergo further tests (mammogram and/or ultrasound scan and/or biopsy) to confirm the diagnosis. This does not necessarily mean that it is cancer.
This further examination may be carried out on the same day; if not, a new appointment will be arranged for you.
If you suffer from claustrophobia, we can offer you a virtual hypnosis session.
Please contact us 48 hours before the examination on 02/ 434 88 50.
